Brüggen extensively replaces palm oil

Alternatives and RSPO certification:

The use of palm oil has faced criticism in recent decades since the high demand for it, such as in the food industry, has contributed towards the deforestation of the rain forests in its countries of origin, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. This has caused the disappearance of the habitat of endangered species such as orangutans. H. & J. Brüggen KG has made the use of raw materials extracted in a resource-friendly manner to one of its corporate objectives. It is for this reason that, wherever possible, we look for alternatives to palm oil. If the use of an alternative is not possible, we insist on RSPO certification. The RSPO initiative supports the sustainable production of palm oil.

Why does Brüggen use palm oil at all?

Palm oil is a technically very pure and stable vegetable oil which has particularly advantageous properties with regard to taste, shelf life and consistency. Other oils are considerably less competitive, especially with regard to shelf life.

Is it possible to replace palm oil?

With regard to alternatives to palm oil, it is over to the experts from our product development department: wherever possible, we use other raw materials such as sunflower oil for our products. Many Brüggen products have already experienced a change-over and are completely free of palm oil. However, a 100% replacement isn’t possible. Hence, where no alternatives currently exist, we have been exclusively using palm oil and raw materials containing palm oil which are certified according to RSPO ever since 2011.

What is the RSPO certification?

The RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) is a private organisation founded in 2004 on the initiative of the WWF. Its objective is to promote the cultivation and the use of sustainable palm oil products by means of credible global standards and the commitment of all those involved. The RSPO certification comprises the inspection and the certification of the cultivation, the refining, the processing, the finishing, the transportation and the sale of the palm oil. The objective of the ecological and sustainable cultivation of palm oil in the countries of origin – in addition to the resource-friendly approach to the habitat of endangered species – is to help fight poverty. The RSPO now comprises more than 500 members, which makes up over 50% of the global production of palm oil.

RSPO certification at Brüggen

We rely on suppliers to provide us with the raw materials we need to produce our products. During the on-boarding process, Brüggen checks the certification of all suppliers whose products contain palm oil. We require our suppliers to provide the current, valid certificate for each and every one of our orders. Brüggen changed over to the use of RSPO-certified palm oil back at the end of 2011. They are inspected in annual audits. In the first phase, the change-over to palm oil in accordance with the Mass Balance (MB) Standard was implemented. This guarantees that the ratio of sustainably produced, certified palm oil in the procured raw materials and products is at least as high as the ratio in the produced products. This type of certification is performed whenever a separation between certified and non-certified palm oil cannot be guaranteed. We have been successfully using palm oil certified according to the Standard Segregation (SG) since early 2016. This RSPO certification is only awarded to products whose used palm oil is certified in all production areas. This allows the blending of certified palm oils of various origins.
