Energy and Environmental Management
Protection of the environment and more energy- and cost-efficient production at the same time: Brüggen's energy and environmental management has set itself some ambitious targets. The energy consumption of the company is to be reduced by a further 2 percent this year.
The code of practice for Brüggen's energy management system was developed in as early as 2013. Projects were planned and implemented with the aim of achieving a long-term reduction in Brüggen's energy consumption as preparation for the DIN ISO 50001 and DIN ISO 14001 certifications required by law as well as a reaction to rising prices for raw materials. The quintessence of this code of practice concerns the installation of a comprehensive monitoring tool allowing for the representation of the energy consumed by the company until 2016, which is updated on a daily basis. The detailed figures can be used to fine-tune the production process and to detect further potential savings. Furthermore, a lowering of CO2 emissions can be achieved by the resulting reduction in energy consumption. The company attaches particular importance to saving resources in times when raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce.
The changes affect all areas of Brüggen. The conversion of the old lighting system to LEDs is just as much part of the initiated measures as the technical optimisation of the production equipment. For instance, the waste heat from suitable roasting and drying processes is used to heat water via heat exchangers and to take over the heating of the building in the winter.
In another part of the company, boiler feed water is preheated by means of waste heat from the air. Transformers for the supply of electricity have been mounted close to the production areas in order to avoid unnecessary power line losses. When systems are renewed or re-positioned, consideration is always given to the aspect of energy consumption and to ensuring they are positioned in a rational manner in order to avoid the superfluous and energy-intensive transport of materials between operations. One thing is for sure here: Less is more when it comes to protecting the environment.
