Oat Cultivation Forum – Brüggen is lending its support to the initiative to increase the amount of oats grown
The Oat Cultivation Forum, which took place in Berlin on 24 September, has set up an initiative with the aim of providing new impetus for the production of oats in Germany.
Oat mills in Germany currently process some 500,000 tons of quality oats – representing a 70% increase in the quantity processed in 10 years.
During the same period, the crop areas in Germany decreased by 22 percent and there was a 27 percent fall in the amount of oats harvested. This therefore means that the supply of this raw material from the domestic market alone is no longer possible at the present time.
The purpose of the initiative of the Oat Cultivation Forum, which was held in Berlin last month, is to create new incentives to grow oats in Germany.
The participants in Berlin came from all areas of business along the value-added chain: from plant cultivation to agriculture and trade through to processing. Authorities and Chambers of several federal states as well as the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture were also represented. The objective of this event was to exchange knowledge on oats, to develop an understanding for each other and to work together to come up with sustainable concepts in order to establish oats as a lucrative cash crop. Moreover, the focus of the new initiative for the cultivation of oats is to raise the awareness of oats in agriculture once more and to provide this cereal grain with greater significance in crop rotation.
At the end of intensive and successful discussions, it was possible to draw the following conclusion from the attendees in Berlin: A long-term and successful collaboration will require partners from agriculture, trade and hulling mills to approach each other, learn from each other and establish relationships based on mutual trust. Further projects at a regional level will also follow with a view to developing the network and transferring knowledge in an effective manner.
Those in charge of the oat mills are convinced: “The objective of establishing oats not just as a temporary alternative but rather as an integral part of crop rotation with lucrative marketing prospects can be achieved with a sustainable transfer of know-how and a greater degree of commitment and enthusiasm. It is then possible to extend the cultivated areas in Germany and to increase the quantity of oats delivered to hulling mills for food production.”
